Jerusalem / West Bank / Gaza

Nablus is a city of 130,000 people in the northern West Bank.  The hillside city is isolated from the rest of the West Bank by Israeli settlements and a system of checkpoints that make travel difficult. Because accessing medical services outside Nablus is often challenging, it is necessary to improve the quality of care inside the city.

In Nablus, Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem to support and improve health care at St. Luke’s Hospital.

St. Luke’s Hospital is a full-service medical facility, offering surgery, pediatrics, women’s health services and intensive care to all in need, regardless of ability to pay.  It also operates a community outreach program to promote health and wellbeing.  Since 2008, the number of patients has increased by 50%, and the hospital has become a trusted and valued institution of the community and the Church.

For information on how we are responding to the current crisis, please see our press release

Promoting Health and Fighting Disease

  • Supporting the salary of the medical director of the hospital, ensuring continued progress toward strategic goals, including self-sustainability
  • Providing a range of medical services to an isolated community
  • Enabling women to have a hospital birth under medical supervision, rather than at home

Responding to Disaster and Rebuilding Communities

  • Equipping the hospital to meet health care needs in Nablus, since checkpoints make travel outside the city difficult
  • Helping to sustain and support the Church’s presence in the Holy Land
