Thrive to Five Campaign
I believe that all children and families deserve a healthy start in life.
Globally, more than 300,000 women die each year from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Although the numbers have decreased by nearly 50% since 1990, this still means 800 preventable deaths every day.
Children under five and pregnant women are the most vulnerable to infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Respiratory infections and diarrhea can also be fatal in young children.
With our local partners, Episcopal Relief & Development is enabling children and families to get the best start in life through maternal health, malaria prevention and early childhood development programs.
In order to reduce illness and death among expectant and new mothers and their children, we support local initiatives that train health workers and community volunteers to actively engage with families and monitor child health. Our work also includes:
- Offering maternal and child health programs
- Training health workers to educate their communities about disease prevention, symptom identification and treatment
- Reducing barriers to care for expectant and new mothers
- Enabling monitoring and facilitation of child health and development
- Supporting care for children orphaned and impacted by HIV/AIDS
- Equipping Malaria Control Agents to ensure pregnant women and children under age five sleep under mosquito nets every night in malaria-prone areas, and to monitor net use through our award-winning flagship malaria prevention program (NetsforLife®).
